It's Okay To Grow Slowly

12:16 PM

It is undeniable that in life we want everything to run easily and quickly. We want everything to run smootly as our plan and perhaps unconsciously it makes us being hard to ourselves, rush the things, do not value every little process we made, and we tend to compare our progress with others. In the end we are afraid of failure, we afraid to be the slowest.

Being slow than others used to be my fears. I am the type of person who needs more time when it comes to understand a lesson. When other people might only need 1 hour to understand the lesson, for me it takes 6 hours. When other people only need to read once to understand, for me it may takes many times. When other people only need a little effort to do things that are actually easy, for me I must have more effort than others.

I still remember when I was child, when the teacher was teaching in class, he asked if we all understood. All my friends in class answered confidently that they understood. Me, with my head down, answered softly "understand" without self-confidence, because actually I don't! I was wondering, am I stupid? Why they can learn faster but I cannot, why are they all smart, why it took me so long to understand? Does being slower than other people mean we are failures?

From that on, I always set the goals, set the plans, set the targets, when should I do this, and when should I finish that, and in the long run I was just getting hurt from my own expectation. I'm afraid of falling behind, I'm afraid of other people's perception of myself that I'm stupid, I'm just afraid of being retarded.

To often, we forget the basics that all processes in this world are not instant. Everything takes time, slow, steady, done in layers and phases.

If we are going to make it wild success, then we have to remember that slow and steady wins the race!

Do you still remember the story of the tortoise and the hare?

There once was a speedy hare who bragged about how fast he could run. Tired of hearing him boast, slow and steady, the tortoise, challenged the hare to a race. All the animals gathered in the forest to watch the race.

The hare started the match by running very fast. Then he stopped and looked back and saw the tortoise was still left behind. Later on Hare ran down the road for a while and then paused to rest. He walked at slow and steady then cried out, "How do you expect to win this race when you are walking along at your slow, slow pace?"

"There is plenty of time to relax" said the hare stretched himself out alongside the road and then he fell asleep, because he thought he would definitely win the race.

The tortoise walked and walked, slow and steady but still made a progress. He never, ever stopped tought he only made a little step, until he came to the finish line, left the sleeping Hare. The animals who were watching cheered so loudly for Tortoise, they woke up Hare.

Hare stretched and yawned and began to run again, but it was too late. Tortoise was over the line. At the end the slow and steady won the race!

After that, Hare always reminded himself, "Don't brag about your lightning pace, for Slow and Steady won the race!"

Just because you take longer than other doesn't mean you are failed.

We seem to hold ourselves up to much higher standard that what we expect from others. Sometimes you just need to slow down, remain calm and simply let life happen, enjoy the process in our life. Instead of telling yourself that "You're to slow", change it to something like "Look how fast I'm learning this", "I've come a long way since I first started this".
Continuing to be hard on yourself doesn't help you. Learning and growing from experience makes it have meaning.

We watch everyone
move so fast towards each other,
but don't you think
how beautiful is
when it moves slow,
and takes time

Sometimes we just need to slow down
remain calm
learn what you love,
fill your life with it
it's okay if you fail
it's okay if you haven't graduated
it's okay if you haven't got a job
it's okay if you still work in a small company
it's okay if you are not financially independent now
it's okay if you are still single
it's okay if you are not married
it's okay if you don't know what you are going to do
it's okay if you only make a little progress
it's okay if you are slower than others

Take a deep breath and focus on the simple important things,
find peace in little moments
how lucky you are
you can spend your time with your family
you have a partner who loves you
you have a friend who always supports you
you are alive
you are breathing
you have dreams
you are happy
you are enough as you are!

Keep going and don't worry about your speed.
You are making progress
even if it doesn't seem like it.
Forward is forward no matter how slow. It doesn't matter how slowly you go as long as you don't stop. Take small steps every day and one day you will get there~
